Reflection on Social Media Case 3: Tom Petty’s “Death” and Death


When I read this case study one of the first things that comes to my mind is fake news. Fake news has always been around in magazines and tabloids. However, social media makes it that much easier for fake news to be put out into the world. In this case study we are looking at new sources announcing Tom Petty’s death before he had actually died. Although this is more so premature news since he died later that day I would still consider it fake news. Fake news is all over social media and sometimes it can be hard to depict what is real and what is fake. For the news sources to announce that Tom Petty had died before his actual death that is putting fake news out into the world. The problem with getting all of our news from social media is not fact checking what we are seeing with other sources. We’ve talked briefly in class about fake news and how it can be a negative side of social media.

We can choose who we follow on social media but that doesn’t mean we can trust the content that our family and friends post. It is the sad reality that we need to fact check most of the things that we see on social media now. It can be hard for us to tell if a source is credible or not which is why fact checking is always important when we’re taking information in.     I liked your post and how you incorporated that Facebook and twitter are trying to figure out ways to flag or report fake news. It is sad that fake news is so common on social that you can't believe anything you read anymore!

    It's important to understand that every news source has bias. If you think that you are getting information from credible sources like NPR or FOX News, keep in mind that they have a bias in their reporting. This is especially prevalent when reporting politics. Two different news outlets can be reporting the same story about Donald Trump but they can sound completely different depending on their bias. Great post!

    I feel the same about how sad it is to have to check everything that is on media resources, I believe that media should be used for constructive purposes, but that is my dream; however, we can still do something to change it and be more responsible about our own posts, wherever and whenever we do them.

To start off this was an interesting case study. It makes me angry for the server and really all servers that are constantly being treated like tips are optional. Reflection on Social Media Case 5: Paypal Deleted Comments

When is it okay to delete comments on social media? It isn’t okay to delete comments because they are say something negative about your business that you don’t agree with. When a company delete comments from their social media because they are off topic or negative it makes that company look bad. This article gives a run down on when it is okay to delete comments. I like this article because it is pretty cut and dry of when to delete comments and when to leave them up. One of the things that it says is that if the comment is negative but civil leave it up because customers deserve to have their voice be heard. It was interesting to me that with the Paypal incident people were commenting negative comments on a post that had nothing to do with what the content of the post was. When I googled Emily Briones this website was the first thing to show up. From this website I’m assuming that Emily is a student athlete for Utah State University. Emily is on the gymnastics team at Utah State. She is from San Antonio, Texas. She has one brother and one sister. In 2017 she suffered a season ending injury. Emily takes her schooling very seriously as she was a Whitesides Scholar Athlete for two years as well as graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA. I was able to assume a lot of information and start to see patterns in Emily from the website because there was so much information about her in one place.
