Reflection on Social Media Case 10: Miracle Mattress Twin Tower Sale
Yikes! My first thought when I see commercials like this is
how did no one involved think this was a bad idea? There wasn’t one person who
looked at this commercial and thought this could be offensive? The company knew
it was bad and they decided to close their store afterwards so I’m wondering
who approved this commercial in the first place. That could be one of the
issues with some American Dream companies. They don’t have the chain of command
for a message to go through to get approved. I don’t think this commercial could
be produced in a none offense way but it also doesn’t help with the tone and
the way they produced this message. This
article was interesting to me because it says that Cherise Bonanno says “she
didn’t realize the 20 second ad would cause the controversy it has”. However,
then right after she says “It was stupid, it was a stupid idea that we sent out
and we apologize for our stupidity and we really hope that you forgive us for
what we have done”. So, she didn’t think it was be offensive but she knows that
it was very stupid. The name alone Twin Towers Sale would be offensive enough
without the commercial.
This
video shows 10 offensive commercials that “you won’t believe exist”. What was
interesting about these commercials is that they are all produced by major
companies. I had earlier talked about how a problem with smaller companies is
that they might not have the chain of command to catch offensive content before
it’s produced. All of the companies in this commercial are well known and
should have quite a few people looking over a commercial before it’s produced.
So to go along with that how do companies decide what they think is too
offensive or okay enough that they can produce it? It’s an interesting subject
but I think that this mattress company definitely didn’t think it over and
crossed the line.
Great job Emma!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree, how did no one catch on to how bad of an idea this was! Great post!
ReplyDeleteI have the same exact thought every time I see a terrible ad like this. Think about how many people have to sign off on that? It's crazy that no one else said anything or had any doubts about the ad.
ReplyDeleteIm with you on the fact of, who let them post this? What were they thinking that could come from this. Great post!
