Reflection on Social Media Case 6: Basketball Cop

I like this case study. I remember seeing this video online when it originally came out. Viral videos aren’t always positive or impactful. Most of the time viral videos are something that is funny however this one video had an impact. When things are hard and bad things are happening in the country it can be hard to see the unity. This video that went viral helped bring two sides together that were getting a lot of bad representation in the media. You can see how much of an impact this video had by looking at the various things it did. This police officer brought positive light into the media with these two sides. It is important for us to remember that the media can be impactful and helpful. One issue that we have in todays world is we see a group of people being portrayed one way in the media and we automatically create stereotypes for those people. Once a stereotype is built or created and can be hard for some people to see past those stereotypes. This article talks about how police officers feel that they are treated unfairly in the media. This is an interesting take to see how officers feel they are treated in the media. When you compare this article to the case study you can see why it is important that the officers get positive representation in the media. I think the coolest part about this video is the foundation that came from it. This website goes over how basketball cop became a recognized video on the internet and now what they’re working toward with the publicity that they’ve gained. The organization is working toward bringing unity with police officers and todays youth. They want todays youth to be able to trust police officers. Overall this video that went viral has helped bring awareness and positivity to the relationships between cops and youth.

  1. I really enjoyed the outside articles you brought in to this post! Police are often seen in a negative light so it is definitely worth noting their feelings about it. I agree, it's really cool that they were able to create a foundation from this natural and organic act that ended up going viral. Great job on your post!

  5. I thought you brought up an interesting point about cops not liking how they are portrayed in the media and how it is important that they change that by posting more positive interactions between them and the communities they serve. Great post.
